says, “I have brought forth a man [ʾîš],” whereas at the close of the narrative she acknowledges, “God has granted me another seed [zeraʿ].” Eve does not say that Seth is given to replace Cain. Rather, Seth replaces Abel. The story is not about Eve’s hope in Cain but in Abel. True to the plot of the remaining narratives in Genesis, Cain, the older son, does not stand to inherit the blessing, but rather the younger son. It is God himself who provides another “seed” (zeraʿ) through yet another son.
